From the trenches to the road

If I tell you “The Pink Panther” (1963) what you think? What does it reminds you? No idea? What if I tell you trench? Yeah, this is one of the films which made famous the trench. A little bit of history.

The trench coat was developed as an alternative to the heavy serge greatcoats worn by British and French soldiers in the First World War. Invention of the trench coat is claimed by both Burberry and Aquascutum, with Aquascutum’s claim dating back to the 1850s. Thomas Burberry, the inventor of gabardine fabric, submitted a design for an army officer’s raincoat to the United Kingdom War Office in 1901.

It was made famous by actors like Humphrey Bogart, Peter Falk in Columbo and Peter Sellers in the Pink Panther saga. And what about women? Garbo was the first diva to launch fashion trench coat lined with wool tartan, wearing it in 1928 on the set of Destiny. Since then it became a must-have for every woman with style. While the ’29 was released theatrically in the U.S., after a long period of stalemate, Queen Kelly starring Gloria Swanson, on her last silent film, flaunts a stylish khaki trench coat, double breasted with collar turned up. In the 30’s, one of the first diva of the nascent Hollywood, Bette Davis, wore a black raincoat coat tied at the waist, waxed, in Of Human Bondage (Slave of Love) in ’34, and two years later, Sylvia Sidney. And how can we forget Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany’s“?

Anyways, why am I talking about the trench? Well, since spring is coming and we will be wearing it. The other day, while going around Pisa after my exam, I was checking the different shops. All of them had already exhibited the spring collection, including, of course, the trench. Since I’d like to buy a new one when the time comes, I already started scouting shops and online, and I found so many models. It’s amazing how many models are there. There are the classic models with the usual color, but we can also find some with more brilliant hues, stripes, polka dots,… There are models to suit all tastes. Anyways, less talk and here is what I found.

Oh and..

  1. Burberry è stato l’antesignano della rivisitazione del trench, che è davvero un must have per tutte e per tutte le stagioni, così come ci mostrano queste belle proposte!

  2. Do I even have to tell you how much I love trench coats? They’re like my favorite piece of clothing. If I was rich I would by the Double Duchess Caped Trench Coat by Burberry. For a trench coat -lover this is the perfect post 🙂
